Can poor sleep cause body aches?
Why Lack of Sleep Increases Pain – Research shows that insufficient sleep and low-quality sleep increase the risk of developing widespread pain, particularly as we age. A three-year study carried out by researchers at Keele University in the UK found that non-refreshing sleep was the factor most strongly linked with the development of pain that was not linked to specific sources.
A separate study into adult women suffering from fibromyalgia found that there was a strong link between sleep problems and the risk of developing the condition. So the evidence is clear that there’s a clear link between sleep quality and pain of all kinds – not just muscle aches. Sleeping in the wrong position or on a bad mattress is not necessarily to blame.
But how exactly can a lack of sleep cause muscle and joint pain? There are three main reasons at play: 1. Poor sleep decreases pain tolerance.2. Poor sleep increases the intensity of pain.3. Poor sleep increases your risk of developing painful chronic conditions.
Scientists do not yet fully understand the link between poor sleep quality and these causes of increased pain, but it’s thought that it may be due to changes in the nervous system when the body doesn’t get enough sleep. These changes cause oversensitivity, meaning that our pain tolerance is lowered. Lack of sleep can also cause inflammation in the body, which will often result in muscle aches and pains and can exacerbate inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
Insomnia is also known to impair athletic performance, which can increase the risk of muscle and joint injuries due to sports, or even an everyday activity such as running to catch a bus. The body’s healing processes are most active during sleep, so if you’re recovering from a soft-tissue injury, not getting enough sleep may mean you need a longer time to recover.

Shoulder Pain This seems to be one of the most common areas that are affected by poor sleeping habits typically due to people placing their arm underneath their head as a pillow or placing their bottom arm underneath a pillow.
This position leaves the arm imprisoned under all of your body weight and, can pinch your rotator cuff tendon between the shoulder and the acromion bone above it. The result is often a feeling of the shoulder “locking” or pain when you go to straighten your arm.
- This can exacerbate shoulder bursitis or injuries to the rotator cuff tendon such as tendinosis, partial tears and full thickness tendon tears.
- Shoulder Bursitis Bursitis is defined as the “inflammation of the bursa”.
- The bursa is a fluid-filled sac that cushions the joint so that your muscles and tendons are not painfully scraping over the joint during a movement.
Lifting heavy objects, overuse, and direct trauma can inflame the bursa sac and aggravate the injury even further. This injury can also be caused from sleeping on one side and it is important to understand not to create the same predicament on the other shoulder while you avoid sleeping on the already-injured shoulder.
Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Tendonitis means “inflammation of the tendons” and occurs in the tendons and muscles outside of the shoulder joint. Tendonitis most commonly happens from overusing the muscles and tendons. Symptoms of shoulder and arm pain occur when you lift your arm up, down, or behind your back.
To avoid rotator cuff tendonitis it is best to sleeping on your back so that no excess weight is placed on the shoulders.2. Neck Pain Many neck injuries stem from poor sleeping habits or exacerbating an existing neck injury with an imposition sleep position.
Sleeping on your stomach can torque your neck as your neck turns to one side as you also hyperextend. This can create tension around the cervical spine and cause impingement on nerve roots or the spinal cord especially if there is underlying arthritis and bone spurs. Trying to find ways to avoid this position is something that should be addressed if you are dealing with consistent neck pain.
Stiff Necks or Neck Strains If you’ve ever woken up with your head feeling like it weighs 1,000 pounds heavier than it does, or not being able to turn your head without a sharp shooting pain, then you more than likely strained your neck in your sleep.
- One of the most common reasons for neck pain after sleeping is the tendency to pile up pillows in an effort to give yourself more support.
- However, when the cervical spine is elevated too high, the complete opposite is happening.
- This act can put a strain on the curvature in your spine and neck muscles causing stiffness and soreness.
Acute Torticollis This condition is not always caused solely by a poor sleeping position, but also leaving a window open and having a breeze on your neck. As the cold air continues to hit your neck throughout the night, it is causing the cervical spine muscles to contract and spasm.
This can stop your neck from moving for days at a time! Your neck becomes locked into one position and will not allow any movement whatsoever. This can be a scary occurrence which is why it is important to always to try to maintain proper sleep posture.3. Back Pain Back pains are among some of the most common of all sleeping complaints as your posture directly correlates with your spine.
If you find yourself with a poor quality mattress, a pillow that does not suit your needs, or are just sleeping incorrectly; then you might want to invest some time into considering a way you can sleep better as you may be leaving yourself susceptible to back pain and discomfort.
- Some common injuries that correlate with poor sleep are sciatica, bulging disc and herniated discs,
- Bulging Disc The discs of the spine act as cushions that sit in between your vertebrae and each one of these is made up of a gelatinous fluid substance surrounded by cartilage.
- However, if you sleep on your stomach a mattress can push against the natural S curvature which can cause the discs to degenerate over time.
This degeneration can result in a bulging of the disc with symptoms such as localized pain, muscle spasms and sciatica. To treat this at home, first try ice/heat therapy and rest your back for a couple days. Also, sleep on your back with a rolled towel under your knees.
If this does not provide relief after several days, it is best to consult a spine specialist. Sciatica For those already suffering from Sciatica, the pain is often worse at night and the reason for this is pretty simple. The spinal discs are filled with fluid and depending upon the position in which you are lying, gravity will push the fluid in these discs in that direction.
If you are lying on the side where the disc bulge or herniation (the underlying cause of Sciatica) is most prominent, the increase in fluid can cause the herniation to become larger and put more pressure on the sciatic nerve. They may also ask if you have other conditions, because some people with fibromyalgia have other diseases at the same time. Perform a physical exam. Your doctor will examine your joints to see if you may have another condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus,

Why do my muscles feel weak when I wake up?
WHAT CAUSES MUSCLE WEAKNESS IN THE MORNING? – Muscles are innervated by nerves that originate in the brain and spinal cord. One possible explanation for muscle weakness in the morning is that nerves are not maximally “driving” muscles at this time of day.
A way to test this neural drive is to superimpose a strong electrical pulse to an individual’s nerves while they perform a test of muscle strength. If the electrical pulse creates additional force from the muscle, it means the individual’s nervous system was not driving the muscle at maximally capacity.
This seems like a plausible explanation for muscle weakness in the morning, because during certain periods of sleep, limb muscles are paralysed by the nervous system (“motor atonia”). However, studies that have assessed neural drive to muscles in the morning and evening have reported no effect of time of day ( Guette et al.2005 ; Martin et al.1999 ).
- A second possibility is that the muscle’s contractile characteristics change throughout the day.
- These characteristics are independent of the nervous system, and a way to examine them is to deliver an electrical pulse (or series of pulses) to the muscle while it is at rest.
- When this has been done, researchers have found that muscle twitch characteristics are different in the morning than evening ( Guette et al.2005 ; Martin et al.1999 ).
These findings suggest things like calcium release and uptake and concentrations of inorganic phosphates in the muscle are partly responsible for fluctuations in strength throughout the day ( Guette et al.2005 ; Martin et al.1999 ). Unfortunately, the precise mechanisms are still unknown.
What can be mistaken for fibromyalgia?
Rheumatologic disease – Several rheumatic diseases can mimic fibromyalgia. These include sero-negative rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Lyme disease, polymyalgia rheumatica and lupus. They have symptoms of widespread pain along with joint involvement. Most rheumatic diseases are treated with medication and physical therapy.
What age does fibromyalgia show up?
Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is also called fibromyalgia syndrome. A syndrome is a group of symptoms that happen together. People with fibromyalgia experience aches and pain all over the body, fatigue (extreme tiredness that does not get better with sleep or rest), and problems sleeping.
- Fibromyalgia may be caused by a problem in the brain with nerves and pain signals.
- In other words, in people with fibromyalgia, the brain misunderstands everyday pain and other sensory experiences, making the person more sensitive to pressure, temperature (hot or cold), bright lights, and noise compared to people who do not have fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia has been compared to arthritis. Like arthritis, fibromyalgia causes pain and fatigue. But, unlike arthritis, fibromyalgia does not cause redness and swelling, or damage to your joints. Fibromyalgia affects as many as 4 million Americans 18 and older.

- Have another rheumatic (related to the joints) condition, such as or
- Have a close relative with fibromyalgia. Researchers think a gene or genes may cause pain when pain would not normally happen.
- Have or had trauma to the brain or spinal cord. Physical trauma may come from an injury or repeated injuries, illness, or an accident. Emotional stress or trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, may also lead to fibromyalgia.
Chronic (long-term), widespread pain is the most common symptom of fibromyalgia. You may feel the pain all over your body. Or, you may feel it more in the muscles you use most often, like in your back or legs. The pain may feel like a deep muscle ache, or it may throb or burn. Your pain may also be worse in the morning. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include:
- Extreme tiredness, called fatigue, that does not get better with sleep or rest
- Cognitive and memory problems (sometimes called “fibro fog”)
- Trouble sleeping
- Mood problems
- Morning
- Muscle fatigue, causing them to twitch or cramp
- Headaches
- (IBS)
- Painful menstrual periods
- Numbness or tingling of hands and feet
- Temperature sensitivity
- Sensitivity to loud noises or bright lights

Women with fibromyalgia often have more morning fatigue, pain all over the body, and IBS symptoms than men with fibromyalgia have. Fibromyalgia symptoms can happen without warning. But certain events may trigger flare-ups, including:
- Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. You may have more trouble sleeping, more widespread pain, or headaches just before your period when your hormone levels drop. Your periods may also be more painful.
- , Chronic (long-term) stress may raise your risk for getting fibromyalgia. Also, short-term stress, such as work stress, or stressful events, such as a death of a loved one, can trigger flare-ups in people who have fibromyalgia.
- Changes in weather. Some women report pain with changes in barometric pressure (such as when the temperature drops from warm to cold) or on hot, humid days.
Researchers are not sure exactly what causes fibromyalgia. Genetics may play a role. Studies also show that the brains of people with fibromyalgia may not process pain in the same way as people who do not have fibromyalgia. Lower levels of certain brain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin or norepinephrine, may cause you to be more sensitive to pain and have a more severe reaction to pain.
Imaging studies of the brain show that people with fibromyalgia feel pain when people without fibromyalgia do not. Some medicines prescribed to treat fibromyalgia try to bring the levels of those neurotransmitters back into balance. Your doctor or nurse will ask about your symptoms and your medical history.
There is no lab test for fibromyalgia. Instead, your doctor will make a diagnosis based upon two criteria:
- You have experienced widespread (in many places on the body) pain for longer than three months.
- You have other symptoms, such as fatigue, or memory or sleep problems.
You may have to see several doctors before getting a diagnosis. One reason for this may be that pain and fatigue, the main symptoms of fibromyalgia, also are symptoms of many other conditions, such as,, and, Doctors try to figure out if fibromyalgia or another health problem is causing your symptoms. Treatment for fibromyalgia may include:
- Medicine to treat your pain. The Food and Drug Administration has approved : pregabalin, duloxetine, and milnacipran. Your doctor may also suggest pain relievers or antidepressants to treat certain symptoms or to prevent flare-ups.
- Talk therapy. Counseling sessions with a trained counselor can teach you different skills and techniques you can use to better control your pain. This type of therapy can be either one on one or in groups with a therapist. Living with a chronic condition like fibromyalgia can be difficult. Support groups may also give you emotional support and help you cope.
Your doctor or nurse may also suggest to relieve your symptoms. You can take the following steps at home to help relieve your symptoms:
- Getting enough sleep. Most adults should try to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. But fibromyalgia can make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. Talk to your doctor about any sleep problems you have and ways to treat them. Your doctor may recommend:
- Going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time every day
- Not drinking caffeine, alcohol, or eating spicy meals before bedtime
- Not taking daytime naps
- Doing relaxing activities, such as listening to soft music or taking a warm bath, that prepare your body for sleep.
- Reducing stress. Stress can trigger a flare-up of fibromyalgia symptoms. Strategies such as meditation, massage, and talk therapy may help. Get,
- Getting regular physical activity. Pain and fatigue may make exercise and daily activities harder to do. But studies show that for many women with fibromyalgia, regular physical activity can reduce pain. Any activity, even walking around your home or neighborhood, can help relieve your symptoms. Start at a very low level, and slowly increase the amount of activity you get.
- Trying complementary or alternative therapies. Some women say their symptoms got better from trying complementary or alternative therapies, such as:
- Physical therapy
- Massage
- Myofascial release therapy
- Acupuncture
- Relaxation exercises
- Tai chi
- Yoga
Maybe. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease that is often a lifelong condition. But fibromyalgia is not a progressive disease, meaning it will not get worse over time. It also does not cause damage to your joints, muscles, or organs. Taking steps to can help relieve your symptoms.
- Many women with fibromyalgia have no problems getting pregnant, and some women report that their symptoms get better during pregnancy.
- But, for some women, fibromyalgia can cause problems during pregnancy.
- Your symptoms may flare or get worse, especially in the first few months of pregnancy.
- Also, some normal pregnancy complaints, such as fatigue, stress, and mood swings caused by changing hormones, may be worse for women with fibromyalgia.
Talk to your doctor about any medicines you take to treat fibromyalgia, as they may cause other health problems for you or your unborn baby. (ME/CFS) and fibromyalgia are similar in many ways. A person can have fibromyalgia and ME/CFS. Both ME/CFS and fibromyalgia have pain and fatigue as symptoms.

What happens if fibromyalgia is left untreated?
A major risk of leaving fibromyalgia untreated is that symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, and depression can become excruciatingly worse over time. Fibromyalgia also has a huge impact on mental health and anxiety and mood disorders can also worsen if you don’t treat fibromyalgia.
Does fibromyalgia show up in blood tests?
See a GP if you think you have fibromyalgia. Diagnosing fibromyalgia can be difficult as there’s no specific test to diagnose the condition. The symptoms of fibromyalgia can also vary from person to person and are similar to those of several other conditions.
The GP will ask you how your symptoms are affecting your daily life. They may also examine you to check for visible signs of other conditions – for example, swollen joints may suggest arthritis, rather than fibromyalgia. Tests to check for some of these conditions include urine and blood tests, although you may also have X-rays and other scans.
If you’re found to have another condition, you could still have fibromyalgia as well.

These characteristics are independent of the nervous system, and a way to examine them is to deliver an electrical pulse (or series of pulses) to the muscle while it is at rest. When this has been done, researchers have found that muscle twitch characteristics are different in the morning than evening ( Guette et al.2005 ; Martin et al.1999 ).
These findings suggest things like calcium release and uptake and concentrations of inorganic phosphates in the muscle are partly responsible for fluctuations in strength throughout the day ( Guette et al.2005 ; Martin et al.1999 ). Unfortunately, the precise mechanisms are still unknown.
What causes fibromyalgia?
Possible triggers – Fibromyalgia is often triggered by an event that causes physical stress or emotional (psychological) stress. Possible triggers include:
a serious injury, such as after a car accidentan infection, such as Epstein-Barr virus or Lyme disease having a major operationsignificant emotional trauma, such as after serving in the armed forces during a war
Sometimes, fibromyalgia does not develop after any obvious trigger.
