Will baldness be cured in the future?
It’s unlikely there will be a cure for baldness any time soon. While scientists continue to conduct invaluable research that helps us better understand the condition, there aren’t yet any groundbreaking inroads towards a permanent cure.
Can hair regrow after 2 years of hair loss?
Every guy is at risk of losing his hair, some more quickly than others, It sucks. The follicle itself shrivels up and is rendered incapable of regrowing anything. This type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as male pattern baldness.
That’s the permanent kind, not the temporary thing that happens sometimes due to stress.) This plays out in two ways: the thinning of each hair and the overall loss of density. But, in certain cases of alopecia, these losses are not truly “permanent.” At least, not right away. Sometimes, it can be slowed down or delayed.
So there’s hope! If you’ve been losing hair or if you think you’re at risk of hair loss of thinning, then read on for some possible fixes. The insight and advice comes from Dr. Francesco Fusco, MD of Wexler Dermatology in NYC. His main point? You’ve got to be proactive.
First of all, why is my hair falling out? Fusco says that there’s something called miniaturization happening at the follicular level when a hair falls out. “Miniaturization refers to the slow shrinking of the hair follicle and the diminution of the hair within, until eventually the follicle no longer exists,” she says.
“The remaining tiny hair falls out and nothing grows back.” She says that this is often genetic and caused by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a byproduct of testosterone. DHT clings to the follicle and then slowly shrinks it. This most commonly happens at the temples, the crown, and the front of the head.
(This is also why you don’t see guys losing their hair around the sides and back.) But it is possible to regrow that hair, right?? It depends. “If a follicle has closed, disappeared, scarred, or not generated a new hair in years, then a new hair wouldn’t be able to grow,” Fusco says. But if the follicle is still intact, yes, it is possible to regrow the hair—or to improve the health of the existing thinner hairs.
What can I do? There are some common solutions and some uncommon ones: Oral Medication: “In cases of androgenetic alopecia, finasteride is still the gold standard,” says Fusco. (Finasteride is the generic version of Propecia, which can be prescribed by your dermatologist and is also available via mail subscriptions,) Fusco says that even younger men can slow or delay hair loss by starting a daily finasteride prescription.
- This medication works by inhibiting an enzyme that leads to hair loss,” she notes.
- In clinical trials, 90 percent of the patients either gained hair or maintained their hair over a five-year period.” Topical Medication: There are a few alternatives to finasteride, should it prove to be ineffective or if it starts causing side effects (some patients report losing their sex drive on the drug).
One of these options is minoxidil (aka Rogaine). It’s a topical product, available over the counter, that stimulates hair growth “by activating potassium channels in the follicle—this results in growth factors and prostaglandins that promote hair growth,” Fusco says.

Scientists from Northwestern University say they’ve made a breakthrough that could potentially cure male pattern baldness, a common and frustrating condition resulting in hair loss in men. The researchers say they may have found a potential breakthrough in stimulating hair growth.

Balding can begin at any age. There are several early warning signs to look out for. In adulthood, hair loss, also called alopecia, can start at almost any age. You’re more likely to see signs of balding when you’re middle aged and older, but there’s a lot of variation from person to person.
Some people notice signs of hair loss as early as their late teens and early 20s. Other people will be well into their 60s and beyond with a full head of hair and almost no thinning. Some types of hair loss are temporary, while others are permanent. Let’s get into the most noticeable signs of balding, how to tell the difference between natural balding and other causes of hair loss, and what you can do about it if you need treatment for a condition that causes hair loss.
The signs of balding can also vary between people. Some people might see hair loss that starts at their temples, while others might notice a change in their hairline. This means that not everyone with hair loss will experience every sign of balding. Common signs of balding include :
How close are we to cloning hair?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Hair multiplication or hair cloning is a proposed technique to counter hair loss. The technology to clone hair is in its early stages, but in October 2022, scientists from Yokohama National University successfully cloned fully mature hair follicles in mice.
Scientists previously assumed that in the case of complete baldness, follicles are completely absent from the scalp, so they cannot be regenerated. However, it was discovered that the follicles are not entirely absent, as there are stem cells in the bald scalp from which the follicles naturally arise.
Abnormal behavior of these follicles is suggested to be the result of progenitor cell deficiency in these areas. One recently discovered molecule (SCUBE3), may aid in activating these cells and regrowing hair. The basic idea of hair cloning is that healthy follicle cells or dermal papillae can be extracted from the subject from areas that are not bald and are not suffering hair loss.
They can be multiplied (cloned) by various culturing methods and the new cells can be injected back in the bald scalp, where they would produce healthy hair. In 2015, initial trials for human hair were successful in generating new follicles, but the hairs grew in various different directions, giving an unnatural look.
Scientists believe they may have solved this problem by using nearly microscopic 3D printed shafts to assist follicles growing upward through the scalp. This technique however is still in research phase and is not available for public or commercial use.

What is telogen effluvium? – Telogen effluvium is a type of temporary hair loss caused by a stressor or change to your body. Your hair has three stages of growth and loss (shedding):
Anagen (growth) : This is the most active stage of your hair growth cycle. The cells in the lower part of a hair follicle rapidly divide. Once new hair has formed, it pushes the hair out of your follicle and elongates your hair shafts. A hair follicle can grow hair in the anagen stage for up to four years. Around 80% to 90% of your hair follicles are in the anagen stage at any given time. Catagen (resting) : This is a transitional stage of your hair growth cycle. The lower portion of your hair follicle regresses and the hair stops growing. Around 5% of all hairs are in the catagen stage at any given time. Telogen (shedding) : This is the resting stage of your hair growth cycle. The hair follicle is inactive, and there’s a white bulb of keratin at the root (club hair). The bulb of keratin keeps the hair in the follicle until it sheds, which then starts the hair growth cycle over again. Around 5% of all hairs are in the telogen stage at any given time.
Telogen effluvium affects your hair when it’s in the telogen stage. After a stressor or change to your body, up to 70% of your hair in the anagen stage prematurely enters the telogen phase, which causes hair loss.

Many hair follicles stop producing new hairs. Men may start showing signs of by the time they are 30 years old. Many men are nearly bald by age 60. A type of baldness related to the normal function of the male hormone testosterone is called, Hair loss may be at the temples or at the top of the head. Women can develop a similar type of baldness as they age.
This is called, Hair becomes less dense and the scalp may become visible. As you age, your body and face also lose hair. Women’s remaining facial hair may get coarser, most often on the chin and around the lips. Men may grow longer and coarser eyebrow, ear, and nose hair.
Contact your health care provider if you have sudden hair loss. This can be a symptom of a health problem. NAIL CHANGES AND THEIR EFFECTS Your nails also change with age. They grow more slowly and may become dull and brittle. They may also become yellowed and opaque. Nails, particularly toenails, may become hard and thick.
Ingrown toenails may be more common. The tips of the fingernails may break. Lengthwise ridges may develop in the fingernails and toenails. Check with your provider if your nails develop pits, ridges, lines, changes in shape, or other changes. These can be related to iron deficiency, kidney disease, and nutritional deficiencies.

Can balding stop in your 20s?
Why am I losing hair in my 20s? – As a man in your 20s, you might feel like you’re too young to start losing your hair. But the truth is that hair loss can begin as early as your teen years and continue throughout your life. In fact, up to of men experience hair loss at some point in their life.
- People start to lose their hair early for different reasons, including taking certain medications, undergoing some medical treatments, like radiation, or having nutritional deficiencies.
- But for most men, hair loss is caused by a combination of hormonal and genetic factors.
- This condition, called, or androgenic alopecia, can affect both men and women, though more men than women.
The condition triggers hair loss that can start as early as the mid-teens for about 20-25% of men with the condition. Researchers have found that when your androgen hormones, like testosterone and DHT, are out of balance, your hair starts to thin and fall out.
Is baldness increasing?
Prevalence of male pattern hair loss in 18-49 year old men – PubMed Background: Previous studies investigating the prevalence of male pattern hair loss (MPHL) typically used biased samples of men recruited from clinical populations which may limit generalizability of findings to broader populations.
- Objective: To obtain an updated and improved estimate of the occurrence of MPHL in healthy men residing in the community.
- Methods: Community-based sample of healthy men aged 18-49 years participated in a study investigating the effects of MPHL.
- Participants completed a brief questionnaire self reporting degree of hair loss, general health-related quality of life (HRQL) and hair-loss-specific measures.
A trained observer also rated each participant using standardized classification for MPHL. Results: The proportion of men with moderate to extensive hair loss (type III or greater) was 42%. The proportion of men with moderate to extensive hair loss increased with increasing age, ranging from 16% for men 18-29 years of age to 53% of men 40-49.
Does balding stop at 35?
- Androgenetic alopecia is non-reversible; it is a genetically determined hair loss condition that only affects the top of the scalp, never affects the back or the sides of the hair.
- Androgenetic alopecia affects almost all men to some extent, at some point in their lives.
- Over 90% of men suffer from male pattern hair loss.
However, it affects different populations at different rates. Men that suffer with androgenetic alopecia inherit hair follicles that are genetically susceptible to the effects of an androgen hormone called ‘dihydrotestosterone’ (DHT), or dihydrotestosterone in some areas of the scalp.
- Dihydrotestosterone hormone is a derivative of ‘testosterone’.
- Testosterone is turned into Dihydrotestosterone by specific enzymes.
- The conversion of testosterone to DHT is regulated by the ‘enzyme 5-alpha reductase’.
- LSB: Which are the main factors for men to lose their hair? YK: The 2 main factors that contribute to androgenetic alopecia are genetics and hormones, hence the name of the condition.
Androgenetic is a composite word. The first part of the word is ‘Andro’ and the second is ‘Genetic’. Andro which in Greek means male, refers to the ‘androgens’, and genetic refers to the inherited gene necessary for male androgenetic alopecia to occur.
The genes largely determine whether a man will show androgenetic alopecia, the age of its onset, the pattern and the degree of progress. LSB: Does stress effect hair loss or is it a misconception? YK: Stress itself cannot cause hair loss. However, severe psychological stress can lead to a temporary, fully reversible hair loss condition known as ‘Telogen effluvium’.
LSB: If there is baldness that runs in your family, do you have a higher risk of losing your hair or is it genetic? YK: Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic condition that can be inherited from either a parent, or both. However, it is not certain how exactly these baldness genes are passed on.
- For example, an individual may suffer from baldness, while his father and his brother have a perfect, thick head of hair, and vice versa.
- It is possible for a man to be a carrier of balding genes and not suffer from baldness.
- It is important to note that baldness genes on its own cannot make a man lose his hair.
It is the presence of hormones and time that enable the genes to express themselves. LSB: How can you detect early stages of going bald? YK: Early stages or signs of going bald are noticeable thinning on the top, a receding hairline, excessive hair on the pillow, excessive hair in the bath plug or shower bed and on brushes, combs and hands when styling the hair in the morning.
- However, many men do not identify their hair loss until it has become advanced or until a close friend or family informs them about it.
- LSB: Is there anything you can do to stop going bald, if you spot early stages of balding? YK: Although, very rarely men spot their hair loss at an early stage, yes you can stop it! There are several treatments that can be prescribed, which can prevent further hair loss and even increase hair growth.
Please note that those treatments cannot cure the condition and only promote results for as long as they are used. Also, those treatments cannot promote hair in bald areas where the follicles are completely damaged. LSB: At what age can hair loss begin? YK: The age that hair loss begins is variable.
In most patients, male pattern hair loss begins at any time after puberty, when the levels of androgens rise in the blood. The progression of the condition tends to be very slow, spanning several years to decades. However, an earlier age of onset may predict a quicker rate of progression. Male pattern hair loss progresses rapidly between the ages of 20-30.
After the age of 30-35, shedding starts slowing down, as the levels of androgens in the blood start reducing. In older men with androgenetic alopecia, the hair loss slows down even more. Hair loss stabilizes together with the gradual decline of androgen levels in the blood. LSB: What treatment would you recommend for hair loss? YK: There is no specific treatment to recommend, since every case is unique and several factors need to be considered before offering any advice. Some of the current available treatments are hair transplantation/replacement, platelet rich plasma, micropigmentation to resemble shaven scalp, Dermaroller, hairpieces, cosmetics, Minoxidil solution, Finasteride tablets and Dutasteride.
Low level laser therapy is also another safe alternative or additional treatment for androgenetic alopecia. LSB: What are the possible side effects of treating hair loss? YK: Side effects depend on the treatment used. Since there are various available treatments, the side effects vary too. For example, a topical solution may cause some local irritation, whilst a hair transplant may cause an infection.
LSB: Do hair-thickening shampoos for men actually work? YK: Hair-thickening shampoos do work to an extent. They can fake the appearance of hair and make them appear thicker, but they don’t actually fix thinning hair, as they can’t promote the growth of new hairs or treat the follicles.
- Healthy hair starts from within the body.
- LSB: What haircuts do you recommend for men who start experiencing a receding hairline? YK: It is very common for men who start experiencing a receding hairline to seek advice from their barbers, since in many cases the barber is the first person that sees it.
A barber’s creativity skills can help to make the hairline recession less visible, but this is only a temporary solution. My personal advice is to visit a registered trichologist as soon as the receding hair becomes noticeable. A trichologist is a hair specialist, who can offer a lot more options to treat or stabilize the condition before it is too late.
- Male pattern baldness is usually characterized by a receding hairline on the front of the head.
- Initially, the hair begins to recede above both temples.
- Over time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic “M” shape.
- Hair loss extends to the crown, the top of the head.
- Then, the thin area on the top of the head expands and in many cases ultimately unites with the front area, gradually developing a bald patch at the middle of the scalp.
However, the pattern and the development speed of hair loss in each person is different. The stages of progression of hair loss may or may not travel through each of all the stages and the development may stop at any time. Also, as previously stated, after the age of 30-35, hair loss slows down and gradually stabilizes.
Depending on the individual’s hair loss pattern and his hair density on the top, few haircuts could be recommended. If hair loss does not extend to the crown and the top is still thick, there are few options such as messy one length all over with the hair on the sides covering the temples, French crop to cover the temples and recession hairline, short comb over to the side with high temple fade.
If hair loss extends to the crown, the best option is to keep it short with clippers. High fades, particularly zero makes the top look thicker and the thin temples and crown less visible. LSB: Have you got any insider tips or advice on avoiding hair loss for men? YK: Male pattern baldness cannot be avoided, but seeking medical advice as soon as hair thinning becomes noticeable can help to prevent further hair loss.
Also, following a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly, wash the hair with a mild shampoo and avoid damaging them with chemicals and heat are beneficial measures for maintaining healthy hair. It’s important to do your research before beginning any hair loss treatment, and if you’re in any doubt, then consult a professional first.

Hair Loss in Your 30s and Beyond – By the time you turn 30, you have a 25% chance of displaying some balding. By age 50, 50% of men have at least some noticeable hair loss. By age 60, about two-thirds are either bald or have a balding pattern. While hair loss is more common as you get older, it doesn’t necessarily make it any easier to accept.

If you accidentally pull out a strand of your hair and it has a ball (bulb) on the end of it, you didn’t pull out the follicle, and instead, you removed your hair root.
