Pain’s Assault (22 Episodes) – For many Naruto fans, “Pain’s Assault” is seen as the highest peak of the series. The “Pain” arc sees Akatsuki leader Pain leading an attack on Konohagakure in his effort to find Naruto and track down the Nine-Tailed Beast. Naruto’s story of Pain spans from episode 152 to 169, and from 172 to 175 in the Shippuden anime.

Is The Pain arc the last arc?
Naruto Shippuden’s War arc was disappointing, but ending Naruto after the Pain arc would have not been the right answer to the series’ problems. The idea that Naruto Shippuden should have ended after the Pain arc is quite common, and while it may seem like a solid point at first, it doesn’t really hold up. The fact that the leader of the Akatsuki was able to easily kill Jiraya established right away how powerful Pain was, and it set the stage for the ultimate confrontation between Naruto and the person chasing the Jinchurikis. More than a Pain vs. Naruto fight, the Pain arc was about the fate of the Leaf Village.
The Pain arc felt like a culmination of everything Naruto Shippuden had done up until that point. With Sasuke going after the Eight-Tails, Naruto was the only Jinchuuriki left for the Akatsuki to capture. With so much at stake and Naruto facing what audiences believed to be the most powerful Naruto Shippuden character, the Pain arc did play out like a finale.

| Minato appears within Naruto’s psyche, revealing himself to a chakra imprint of the actual Fourth Hokage as he takes Naruto to another part of his mind to discuss things away from the furious Nine Tails. It was there that Minato revealed himself as Naruto’s father, making Naruto further conflicted on why his own father made him a jinchuriki. But Minato reveals he only sealed half of the Nine Tails into Naruto, revealing that the Nine-Tails’ attack on the Hidden Leaf Village 16 years ago was Tobi’s doing, theorizing that Pain may be a pawn of the masked ninja to Naruto’s shock. Placing his faith that Naruto will find the answer to Pain’s question, Minato restores the Nine Tails seal before fading away. Back to normal, and no means to renew his Sage Mode, Naruto confronts Pain and demands to meet Nagato himself. Pain refuses, resulting in a fight with Naruto stabbing himself with a Chakra Receiver to pinpoint Nagato’s location. After using up his last Rasen Shuriken followed by a mass clone attack to force his opponent to exhaust his gravity manipulation, Naruto uses the 5-second window to land a Rasengan on Pain. | ||||||
