I have personally experienced the pain of loss, heartache, and adversity and leveraged its power to transform my response.
- We have two choices when confronted with pain.
- Use it as motivation or allow it to drive us deep into a dark place.
- The dark path makes dangerous devices seem like the obvious solution to mitigate our pain.
- Sadness, loss of hope become plentiful, and depression is often the result of allowing feelings of sadness to spiral out of control.
The alternative is to embrace our pain and commission its power to serve as a catalyst for positive change. It seems counterintuitive, but when pain is pounding at our heart, we have one choice that liberates remarkable potential, and it’s the only choice that prevents the prolonged sadness which can lead to depression. Improved relationships Many people become isolated and push people away when they suffer pain. The better option. Move closer to those you love and cultivate stronger connections. Be vulnerable and watch our connections grow deeper. Close friends hold each other up during difficult times and our relationships flourish when we are transparent.
More compassion It’s easy to become bitter when we experience pain. The alternative is to gain greater compassion and appreciate everyone suffers pain. When we have this epiphany, we become more empathetic. We also start to focus more on helping those around us that might be suffering. That shift takes the emphasis off us and places it on someone else.
Wiser We gain wisdom when we suffer pain. It puts things into perspective and helps us appreciate the importance of time. It also helps us learn to prioritize. We start to focus on what matters most and spend less time worrying about what people think. We concentrate on being more generous and resist being a taker. Stronger Turning pain into something positive is like body building. We gain strength, mental fortitude and grow. Each obstacle helps us get stronger as we push past the pain and acquire evidence, we have the ability to overcome adversity. “Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you”. Inspiration Pain is a powerful source of inspiration. I know when my father died, I made the decision that day to amplify my efforts to be relevant. I wanted to share my knowledge with others to leave a permanent mark on the world. I had always been incredibly successful, but now life had greater meaning.
I started writing every day and began my podcast. Let pain inspire your projects. Joy and happiness Some people debate the difference between joy and happiness. Both are essential. Happiness is a decision supported by good choices that increase its prevalence in our life each day. Joy is a product of momentary feelings that surface each day that remind us how fortunate we are and how beautiful life truly is.
Experiencing more joy improves our prospects for creating a happier disposition. Less selfish I have discovered by focusing on other people we spend less time ruminating about our pain. Give generously to those around you. Be assiduous and help other people achieve their goals.
Pour time into your kids, family, and friends. Be a giver not a taker and watch how much better life becomes. Humility Pain can make us incredibly humble by appreciating how fragile life is and by understanding how similar we truly are. We relate better with people and spend less time judging one another.
We use our pain as a tool to be more relatable and nurture a spirit of kindness in everything we do. The negative feelings become less common, and we focus on being a source of positive energy in a world that seems lost and without hope. “New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings”.

Why does pain make me feel strong?
It felt like I had a mouthful of hornets stinging me all at one time – Jason McNabb – The Bhut Jolokia, or ‘ghost pepper’ can measure more than a million Scoville units – in other words, it is 200 to 400 times spicier than a jalapeno. It’s one of the hottest in the world, and anyone who takes so much as a nibble is likely to suffer excruciating pain. Jason McNabb is a champion chilli-eater and describes it as “pure hell” (Credit: Guinness World Records) Common sense tells us that people seek pleasure and avoid pain. But that’s not always the case – various activities involve pain, including running, hot massages, tattoos, piercings and even BDSM (an abbreviation for bondage, discipline, domination, submission, sadism and masochism).
For McNabb, the pain from the peppers produces a rush that is similar to that produced by food, drugs or sex. “The pain subsided pretty quickly and then it was just the high of the adrenaline and euphoria from the peppers,” Jason explains. The link between pleasure and pain is deeply rooted in our biology.
For a start, all pain causes the central nervous system to release endorphins – proteins which act to block pain and work in a similar way to opiates such as morphine to induce feelings of euphoria. The relationship will come as no surprise to those who run.
Does pain make you weaker or stronger?
Chronic pain can limit your everyday activities and make it hard to work. It can also affect how involved you are with friends and family members. Co-workers, family, and friends may have to do more than their usual share when you cannot do the things you normally do.
You may feel isolated from the people around you. Unwanted feelings, such as frustration, resentment, and stress, are often a result. These feelings and emotions can worsen your back pain. The mind and body work together, they cannot be separated. The way your mind controls thoughts and attitudes affects the way your body controls pain.
Pain itself, and the fear of pain, can cause you to avoid both physical and social activities. Over time this leads to less physical strength and weaker social relationships. It can also cause further lack of functioning and pain. Stress has both physical and emotional effects on our bodies.
- It can raise our blood pressure, increase our breathing rate and heart rate, and cause muscle tension.
- These things are hard on the body.
- They can lead to fatigue, sleeping problems, and changes in appetite.
- If you feel tired but have a hard time falling asleep, you may have stress-related fatigue.
- Or you may notice that you can fall asleep, but you have a hard time staying asleep.
These are all reasons to talk with your doctor about the physical effects stress is having on your body. Stress can also lead to anxiety, depression, a dependence on others, or an unhealthy dependence on medicines. Depression is very common among people who have chronic pain.
Pain can cause depression or make existing depression worse. Depression can also make existing pain worse. If you or your family members have or have had depression, there is a greater risk that you could develop depression from your chronic pain. Seek help at the first sign of depression. Even mild depression can affect how well you can manage your pain and stay active.

The Good, the Bad and the Strange of Physical Pain Most people struggle with pain at some point in their life, and when it gets bad enough it can be a debilitating condition. However, while pain has its obvious and sometimes devastating downside, our ability to feel physical pain is also part of maintaining our health.
For a time, physicians even referred to pain as “the fifth vital sign,” because it can be important to understanding the state of a person’s health and point to the presence of disease. When our pain receptors are working effectively, pain is a useful way for our bodies to tell our brains when a stimulus is a threat to our overall well-being.
However, sometimes pain stops playing a protective role. can occur when a medical professional is unable to effectively treat the underlying condition causing the pain, but it can also happen when there isn’t an underlying disease at all. At that point, pain ceases to be an effective indicator that something is wrong with the body and becomes a disease unto itself.
The Biology of Pain Understanding how pain can go from a useful, if unwelcome, stimulus to a serious malady requires understanding the biology behind pain. And that biology begins with the distinction between the central and peripheral nervous systems. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral nervous system is made up of sensory and motor nerves.
The peripheral nervous system uses a variety of receptors to gather stimuli that they pass on to the brain. When it comes to pain, the most important are called nociceptors. Nociceptors are peripheral sensory neurons, commonly referred to as, They help tell when the body is being damaged.
The signals between the nociceptors and the brain are the basis of what we interpret as pain. How Nociceptors Work Nociceptors can be activated in a variety of ways. Hit your knee on the edge of a coffee table and nociceptors notice the excessive pressure and fire off immediately, telling your brain about the threatening stimulus.
Sometimes the messages nociceptors send to the central nervous system are used by the spinal column to initiate a reaction before you even feel pain. For example, if you put your hand on a hot stove, you might notice that you jerk your hand away even before you “feel” anything.
- Nociceptors aren’t just affected by external stimuli.
- They can also be activated by things happening inside your body.
- If you have a cut that gets infected, it often hurts even if you don’t touch the wound.
- That’s because your body’s to the cut stimulates nociceptors.
- The inflammatory response releases a host of naturally occurring chemical messengers that are designed to let the nociceptors communicate the feeling of pain to the central nervous system.
These messengers include several different types of chemicals, including and a substance called nerve growth factor (NGF). Recent research into controlling pain has focused on controlling some of these messengers. It’s About More Than Just Nerves But a person can feel pain even if nociceptors, cytokines and NGF aren’t involved.
In fact, people report feeling pain in places they don’t even have nociceptors. Some of the best-known examples of this type of pain, often called phantom pain, come from people who feel pain in limbs that have been amputated. How can people feel pain in a limb they no longer have? Studies show that the parts of the brain that interpret signals from nociceptors can be activated even without external stimuli.
In fact, MRI and PET scans show the portions of the brain that used to receive input from the nociceptors in an amputated limb have increased activity during an episode of phantom pain. The existence of phantom pain is a testament to the complexity of physical pain.

Pain As A Protection System Did you know that pain is actually a protective mechanism? Pain is important for keeping our bodies safe. It notifies us that an event has occurred that may be damaging to our tissues so that we can make necessary changes to prevent harm. Not all pain is bad!

Causes – Factors causing fatigue There are many causes of fatigue. Some of the reasons people get fatigued are because of arthritis or another chronic condition depression anemia thyroid problems nutritional problems lack of adequate sleep or deconditioning.
- Treating these conditions often leads to a reduction or elimination of fatigue.
- Causes differ from person to person.
- Fatigue may be caused by one factor or it may be caused by several factors.
- Physical causes Disease Fatigue may occur with many types of arthritis and other rheumatic diseases especially those that affect the whole body (muscles skin blood organs as well as joints).
These include rheumatoid arthritis which can cause joint pain and swelling; lupus which can cause a skin rash joint pain and problems with other organs; and fibromyalgia which can cause extreme muscle aches and pain. The process of inflammation can cause pain and swelling and also may cause fatigue.
- If you experience a “flare or period of worsening joint inflammation, you’re likely to become more fatigued.
- Pain If you have joint pain, you may use body positions that are less painful to your joints.
- However, these positions can put extra stress on your joints and muscles.
- This can lead to fatigue.
- The physical and emotional energy you use trying to deal with pain can make you feel fatigued.
Pain also may lead to fatigue by causing you to lose sleep or preventing you from really sleeping well. Anemia Several types of arthritis may be associated with anemia. This is a problem in the blood. It is a decrease of a key ingredient in your body’s energy cycle.
- Anemia makes you feel tired.
- It cannot be corrected just by taking iron pills.
- Being less active You may not feel like doing much if you’re in pain, feeling depressed, or if every task is a major effort.
- When you feel this way, for example, you may do less work around your house or yard.
- But if you don’t get enough physical activity, your muscles will get weaker and feel tired most of the time.
Other health problems Health problems of the heart, lung, and thyroid also may make you feel very tired. Emotional causes Living with any type of arthritis day after day can be emotionally draining. The following types of emotional stress can lead to fatigue: Depression The stress of an illness may make you feel sad or blue.
- You don’t feel like doing anything going anywhere or being with friends and family.
- These feelings can make you feel tired.
- Being tired all the time in turn can contribute to depression.
- It’s a cycle that at times can be difficult to escape.
- Overextending yourself “Most of my fatigue comes from overdoing some people say.
After all my years of living with arthritis I still find it hard to pace myself. The fatigue is always there in varying degrees. Sometimes it is difficult to know when I’ve reached my limit. I don’t always listen to the signals of pain and fatigue. When I feel good I push myself too hard.” Do you feel the same way? If you answer “Yes this may be one cause of your fatigue.

Mareile Poettering is a therapist and mental coach who specialises in psychosomatic illnesses, which are physical conditions caused by mental health issues.
She has a tonne of experience dealing with patients’ trauma, negative emotions and the way they manifest in the body. VICE: Why do we feel sadness more than happiness? Mareile Poettering: Actually, you can’t generalise that, everyone experiences emotions in a different way. But in my profession, I have noticed that many people do feel difficult emotions more strongly than positive ones. Processing a negative emotion like heartbreak can take quite a bit of work. On the other hand, if I’ve had a particularly good day, I don’t stay up at night thinking about it. Is joy a more passive emotion? If we practised holding positive emotions within us, we would perceive joy much more intensely.
On the other hand, we simply cannot overcome difficult emotions passively – if we don’t deal with them, they remain with us and show their effects through our body. They can even develop into mental illness. How does negativity physically manifest itself? I’ve observed in so many patients how strongly unprocessed emotions can affect the body.
One example is broken heart syndrome, which can be triggered by tremendous stress or suffering. Difficult feelings are necessary in life; that’s why I don’t call them negative or bad. Without them, we can’t feel beautiful emotions either. They have so much potential, it’s just important to be able to deal with them. When we keep experiencing grief over and over again, does it mean we haven’t finished processing it? Yes. It’s more difficult to cope with heartbreak, for example, if you don’t know it’ll come with emotions other than grief, like anger and shame. You can’t simply erase a person who was important to you.
Is mental pain stronger than physical?
Coping – Emotional pain can often feel as strong as physical pain and at times can even cause symptoms of pain throughout the body. It can also have a detrimental impact on both short-term and long-term mental well-being, so getting appropriate help and treatment is important.
Talking to someone : Social support is critical for emotional well-being, and talking to a trusted person, whether its a good friend or a counselor, can help. Exercising : Physical activity has been shown to be effective for improving mood, so it can be a good way to help deal with feelings of emotional pain. Blowing off feelings of anger with a run around the block is a better choice than acting out aggressively. Taking an afternoon stroll can do more to lift your mood than scrolling endlessly through social media posts. Practicing mindfulness : Mindfulness, a mental practice that involves focusing on the present moment, can be useful when you are trying to cope with difficult emotions such as anxiety, grief, sadness, and anger. The process involves not only becoming more aware of your emotions but also stress learning to accept and let go of the need to control or eliminate these emotions.
Most importantly, if symptoms of emotional pain are causing significant distress or interfering with your daily life, talk to your doctor or mental health professional.

To be alive is to feel. Travis, a veteran of the Iraq war and a participant in my study on yogic breathing for post- traumatic stress, shared with me at the beginning of the experiment that he was unable to feel emotions. He told me there had been a suicide in his family and that he had felt no emotions during the tragedy.
- After the study was over and his trauma symptoms eased, he came to share with me: “It’s incredible.
- I have feelings.
- I feel good, I feel bad, I feel!” He was grateful to have all his feelings back—both the good and the bad.
- Trauma had numbed him from experiencing any feelings at all.
- He had lived in a sort of dead zone.
Alive yet unable to feel. Yet, we often prefer not to feel. Especially when it comes to negative emotions. Let’s face it, they can range from uncomfortable to outright painful. We know, for example, that loneliness registers similarly to physical pain in the brain.
- So we try to avoid discomfort whether it’s through food, drinking, recreational drugs, impulsive shopping, movies, overworking, overexercising or digital distractions.
- Anything to not feel pain, boredom, sadness, insecurity, loneliness, emptiness, or fear,
- What Hard Times Can Provide What we forget is that if we don’t feel the pain, we also don’t feel the pleasure.
By numbing ourselves to one, we numb ourselves to both. If we don’t feel sad, we also have a hard time feeling happy. We need that contrast. Without down moments, we won’t feel the up moments. Travis was grateful just to feel at all. Good or bad, it didn’t matter.

We become more empathic for others going through a hard time. Our compassion translates into action: How many people have joined fundraisers for health issues that they themselves or their family members have gone through? Research on post-traumatic growth shows that the hardest times—even extreme life-or-death situations—can lead to powerful growth experiences for people.
In particular, they can deepen our relationships, increase our sense of strength, open up new opportunities, increase our appreciation for life, and even deepen our spirituality, The ability to experience our emotions, no matter how uncomfortable, is critical. How to Build Emotional Endurance So how can we build our endurance? The good news is that we all have the tool for it: our minds.
And extensive neuroscience research has shown that our minds are highly trainable. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran going through the Infantry Officer Course distinguished between those men who were able to complete grueling hikes carrying 200-pound backpacks and those who could not.
He noticed that some very able-bodied men dropped out or passed out while others who were physically less fit succeeded. He told me, “It’s not the fact that you are the youngest or the biggest or the fittest that makes you successful. What determines the outcome is your mind.” So how can you train your mind? Meditation is one way.
That helps make you less impulsive. You become better at managing your emotions, neuroscience shows. Learning to control your mind through conscious and controlled breathing is extraordinarily powerful. When US Marine Corp Officer Jake Dobberke’s vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device, he looked down to see his legs severed below the knee.
- At that moment, he remembered a breathing exercise he had learned in a book for young officers called On Combat.
- Thanks to that breathing exercise, he was able to stay calm enough to check on his men, give orders to call for help, tourniquet his own legs and remember to prop them up before falling unconscious,
Later he was told that, had he not done so, he would have bled to death. You can also learn the controlled breathing exercises that we researched and found to reverse the symptoms of trauma. Hypnosis is another form of mind-training. Childbirth is an example of a physically and emotionally painful time that feels truly unbearable.
- During my first child’s birth, I had chosen to go all natural and without medications.
- I felt intense pain during all of the contractions.
- Between contractions, during those breaks with no pain that can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, I was anxious and scared about the next contraction.
I was experiencing what psychologists call “anticipatory anxiety”— I was wary of the next contraction (it doesn’t help that each one gets progressively more painful), anticipating the worst, and, in my particular case, feeling incredibly sorry for myself and completely alone, cursing like a sailor, calling for my mom, crying, and praying.
- I was a hot delirious mess.
- For 17 hours.
- Before my second child was born, I learned self-hypnosis for natural childbirth.
- I still felt pain during the contractions—in fact, I felt it intensely.
- But between contractions, I wasn’t cursing or crying.
- I was in a deep, restful state.
- My husband said it looked like I went into a comatose sleep.
Now, these in-between-contraction moments are not long, certainly not long enough to go back to sleep. But my anticipatory anxiety was completely absent. In between contractions, I wasn’t worried about the next one. I was so peaceful and quiet that my experienced midwife decided to take a nap right as my body was actually getting ready to deliver.
She told a friend who was there that I wasn’t going to give birth until the next day. I gave birth about 20 minutes later. This delivery experience solidified my understanding of the power of our minds. We can train our minds to endure discomfort, both emotional and physical. We can approach our experiences with whole attention,
This is easier and has a better long-term outcome than trying to avoid discomfort through destructive or empty activities. “When you reach the point that you can’t go on, it feels physical, like an immutable limit,” Alex Hutchinson, a former long-distance runner, endurance expert, and the author of Endure, told The New York Times.

Not only will they learn from the act of crying, but they will see the transformation that takes place from working through emotions.
Does crying make you a stronger person?
Tears Can Be the Greatest Form of Resilience The tears that often signify the extent of our capabilities are a sign that we are going through something challenging. In many cases, crying is not giving into a difficult situation, it’s actually the first step of confronting it.
Why do I feel stronger after crying?
Not all tears are created equal – Scientists divide the liquid product of crying into three distinct categories: reflex tears, continuous tears, and emotional tears. The first two categories perform the important function of removing debris such as smoke and dust from our eyes, and lubricating our eyes to help protect them from infection.
Their content is 98% water. It’s the third category, emotional tears (which flush stress hormones and other toxins out of our system), that potentially offers the most health benefits. Researchers have established that crying releases oxytocin and endogenous opioids, also known as endorphins. These feel-good chemicals help ease both physical and emotional pain.

Is anyone immune to pain?
Introduction – Pain alters the quality of life more than any other health-related problem, and it is one of the implements of body protection. It interferes with sleep, mobility, nutrition, thought, sexual activity, emotional well-being, creativity, and self-actualization.

CIPA is extremely dangerous, and in most cases the patient doesn’t live over age of 25. Although some of them can live a fairly normal life, they must constantly check for cuts, bruises, self-mutilations, and other possible unfelt injuries. Self-mutilation is an almost invariable feature of this disorder, most often involving the teeth, lips, tongue, ears, eyes, nose, and fingers.
Do humans need to feel pain?

If it didn’t hurt to walk on a broken leg, a person might keep using it and cause more damage. If your throat is really sore, you’ll probably go to the doctor, who can treat the infection if you have one. Doctors and other health professionals use a person’s pain as a clue in figuring out what is wrong.
The first question you will probably be asked is: “how much pain do you have?” or “how much does it hurt?” Often a nurse will show you some pictures of faces with smiles or tears so that you can choose the one that matches how you feel. This will help your doctor or nurse know how much you hurt.
Where does it hurt? Does it hurt all the time? When did it start hurting? Does the pain stay in one place or move around? Does anything make the pain feel better? What makes it worse?

Should I train to pain?
Understand the pain – The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as an ‘unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.’ In other words, something that starts to bloody hurt. Pain is a warning sign and its job is to let you know when something is about to go down.

INTRODUCTION – Chronic wounds that have failed to heal after 3 months of appropriate wound care affect approximately 6.5 million people in the US with a prevalence of 1% and costs estimated at $25 billion per year ( 1 ). In addition to the financial costs, these wounds significantly impact mortality ( 2 ) and cause considerable pain, affecting patient reported psychosocial well-being and quality of life ( 3, 4 ).
Recalcitrant wounds are often arrested in the inflammatory phase ( 1, 5 – 9 ). Transition of wounds to the healing phase is marked clinically by a dramatic improvement in wound-related pain; however, the molecular mechanisms driving this are not well understood, and it is not known whether more aggressive analgesic management could improve healing outcomes.
The pain associated with chronic wounds has been postulated to be related to the stimulation of nociceptors by the complex inflammatory milieu in the wound microenvironment( 10 ). Molecular studies investigating keratinocyte biology and wound healing have shown that functionally active μ-opiate receptors are present on human keratinocytes( 11 ).
- Activation of these receptors by the μ-opiate receptor agonist β-endorphin in cultured keratinocytes results in upregulation of the type II transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) receptor and cytokeratin 16 (CK16)( 12 ).
- The type II TGF-β receptor plays an important role in wound healing; it is expressed in regenerating epithelial cells in acute wounds and in epithelial cells at the margin of chronic wounds.
CK16 is a filament protein that is not expressed in normal skin, but appears in the suprabasal compartment of the epidermis during wound healing and in hyperproliferative skin disorders such as psoriasis( 13 ). Additional experiments using cultured keratinocytes show that the CK16 response can be blocked by incubation together with the μ-opiate receptor antagonist naltrexone( 11, 12, 14 ).
This finding suggests that hypothetically the clinical use of opioids for patients with chronic wounds might be beneficial in upregulating molecular pathways contributing to wound healing and may be associated with improved clinical outcomes. Other studies have suggested that opioid use may negatively impact wound healing, by reducing immune activation, impacting tissue oxygenation and angiogenesis( 15, 16 ) and altering myofibroblast recruitment as well as impacting keratinocyte cytokine production, endothelial proliferation and angiogenesis( 15 – 17 ).
In contrast however, untreated pain can also impact wound healing since it potentially impacts tissue perfusion and oxygenation( 18, 19 ) and may interfere with proper wound care, debridement and dressing changes( 20 ). The purpose of this project was to use data collected through the Wound Etiology and Healing (WE-HEAL) study to investigate the relationship between patient reported pain, opioid exposure and wound outcome in the clinical care of a longitudinal cohort of patients with chronic wounds.
Why does healing hurt?
Why does healing hurt? This is a question that I have been asked time and time again during my journey into intuitive coaching. For this reason, I have felt compelled to write a piece on this exact topic; however, I must preface this by saying that everyone’s journey of healing is unique, flawed and personal, so do not feel that healing comes in a one size fits all model but we’ll talk about that later.
When we think of healing, we often lean into that understanding of goodness, nourishment, beauty. It is my belief that we do this because it is easier to digest a transition of positive change opposed to change that is created by challenges, confrontations, and collision of emotions. Healing, although fulfilling and wonderful, is testing.
It will test your ability to advocate for yourself, to love yourself even when mirrored with the ugly sides of you and more than this, healing means holding space for yourself first, So let us unpack the various formations of healing and why it causes us discomfort.1.
Healing is not linear, I am sure you have heard this before, but it is such a fundamental truth in healing. The way in which healing twists and turns means that you are unable to control the direction of the path. Instead, you are forced to allow yourself to flow with the current, even when it feels like you are going against it.
If healing was straightforward, we would all be sitting in a circle around the world singing songs of praise at the top of our lungs. The reality is that we are all at different stages of healing and therefore our trajectory peaks and falls thus reminding us that the route towards peace is unpredictable for everyone.
- In addition to this, healing is not straightforward because it is episodic,
- As you heal, we tend to focus on one wound at a time.
- You will jump in and out of time, season, space, finding emotional connections between our inner child, present self, and future ideas of Self; tethering them together can be the making of sloppy patchwork that leave you with a slanted blanket to wrap yourself up in; but it is yours.2.
Being uncomfortable means you’re doing it right. As you delve into the realms of healing you are making a silence agreement with Self that you are open to being uncomfortable. You will be left with the odd bruise, a fractured ego, a lingering ache here and there, but it is all part of the murky business of healing.
- Remember being comfortable does not motivate you to grow and expand.
- This leads me to the next point.3.
- Healing is not about the familiar,
- It takes you into territories that you have wanted to evade.
- By removing the familiarity, you are forced to explore, to be observant and to make choices that are based on your new perceptions not what you relied on prior to.4.
Healing has no destination, Sometimes what makes healing a painful process (at times) is that it is an ongoing journey. There is no end. For some people this thought alone is overwhelming, but the beauty is the more you heal, the more you grow, the more you experience.5.
- Healing is a singular experience,
- Yes, others can help you along your way, but ultimately all the hard work, the tears, the moments of stillness, the battles that you will encounter before the war are done alone.
- In isolation and solitude.
- This is not to be feared.
- If anything, this is one lesson that you should embrace deeply on your journey.
This coming to Self is what provides you with the opportunity to reconnect with your core identity. Being a part of a collective makes things so much easier to digest, or so we are led to believe. As we heal, we evolve and sometimes it is necessary to do this process by yourself.
There is an element of doubt and anxiety that comes with doing things for we by ourselves, but no one can narrate, rewrite, or reimagine what your experiences are, therefore it is important to accept this part of the uncomfortable realness of the healing process.6. Healing makes us see the parts of ourselves that we want to run away from,
This is especially visible when doing inner child healing. The realisation of having to remember memories that you have had ticked away in box, in the corner of your mind can be daunting. It can be painful. It can hurt to revisit parts of yourself that you may have been unable to protect or stand up for.
- Confronting those shadows from your past can be extremely taxing on your emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing but to overcome you must be willing to go through it.7.
- Healing is a choice,
- When you decided to take those first steps into healing Self, you are making a conscious choice to be vulnerable,
This is scary. Choosing to be vulnerable means you are ready to show up in all your glorious imperfection, owning every inch of your Being. What it also means is that you are choosing You, and for some of you out there this is something that you rarely do.8.
- Healing is not for the faint hearted,
- This is the challenge with healing between the internal confrontations, the external factors that help to frame your experience(s) and the effort that must be applied you will leave you feeling drained.
- When you add the layer of processing into the mix it becomes a deep valley with high peaks and muddy lows.
You must navigate your way through the trenches and then note every stone that you stumble over, look under and use to find your way back home. Healing takes a great amount of courage and inner power. Although it is a journey of the unknown, it is also one of the braves.9.
- Healing is the peeling back of scabs on old wounds,
- You are irritating those old scars that you let “heal” over but never really attended to.
- You are rubbing salt into some of those open cuts, cleansing any debris that could be lodge in there.
- It stings for a little while, but it heals better once it has been taken care of with compassionate tenderness.10.
Healing is growth, The reality is growth stretches you, it pulls you in one direction and pushes you in the other. It requires your patience and understanding. It survives with your perseverance. It is seasonal and for this reason no two seasons are alike.

The SCN9A gene provides instructions for making one part (the alpha subunit) of a called NaV1.7. Sodium channels create an opening in the cell membrane to transport positively charged sodium atoms (sodium ions) into cells. Sodium ion transport play a key role in a cell’s ability to generate and transmit electrical signals.
NaV1.7 sodium channels are found in nerve cells called nociceptors. These cells transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain; this pain signaling is known as nociception. The NaV1.7 sodium channel is also found in, which are nerve cells in the nasal cavity that transmit smell-related signals to the brain.
Certain variants in the SCN9A gene can cause cells to produce alpha subunits that do not work normally. These nonfunctional subunits do not allow NaV1.7 sodium channels to open, preventing the flow of sodium ions into nociceptors. This lack of sodium ions blocks nociceptors from transmitting pain signals from the site of an injury to the brain.

Does pain make life better?
Pain builds pleasure – An excellent example of how pain may enhance pleasure is the experience commonly referred to as “the runners high”. After intense physical exertion, runners experience a sense of euphoria that has been linked to the production of opioids, a neurochemical that is also released in response to pain. If you experience a “flare or period of worsening joint inflammation, you’re likely to become more fatigued. Pain If you have joint pain, you may use body positions that are less painful to your joints. However, these positions can put extra stress on your joints and muscles. This can lead to fatigue. The physical and emotional energy you use trying to deal with pain can make you feel fatigued.
Pain also may lead to fatigue by causing you to lose sleep or preventing you from really sleeping well. Anemia Several types of arthritis may be associated with anemia. This is a problem in the blood. It is a decrease of a key ingredient in your body’s energy cycle.
Anemia makes you feel tired. It cannot be corrected just by taking iron pills. Being less active You may not feel like doing much if you’re in pain, feeling depressed, or if every task is a major effort. When you feel this way, for example, you may do less work around your house or yard. But if you don’t get enough physical activity, your muscles will get weaker and feel tired most of the time.
Other health problems Health problems of the heart, lung, and thyroid also may make you feel very tired. Emotional causes Living with any type of arthritis day after day can be emotionally draining. The following types of emotional stress can lead to fatigue: Depression The stress of an illness may make you feel sad or blue.
You don’t feel like doing anything going anywhere or being with friends and family. These feelings can make you feel tired. Being tired all the time in turn can contribute to depression. It’s a cycle that at times can be difficult to escape. Overextending yourself “Most of my fatigue comes from overdoing some people say.
After all my years of living with arthritis I still find it hard to pace myself. The fatigue is always there in varying degrees. Sometimes it is difficult to know when I’ve reached my limit. I don’t always listen to the signals of pain and fatigue. When I feel good I push myself too hard.” Do you feel the same way? If you answer “Yes this may be one cause of your fatigue.

- Trying to hide your illness from others Some people don’t want others to know they have arthritis.
